Mathias Quattlebaum named one of his daughters Girtrud (who married John Rinhart) and who inherited 1/2 of the Dickert/Quattlebaum 300 acres. Thomas Gary and Charles Gary lived in a small community on Bush River. John Pearson wrote concerning the Indians: 'In short they have burned and destroyed all up Bush River, except Jacob Brooks where there are some people gathered together to stand in their own defense.' Those who signed the petition asking relief against the Indian depredations were: Charles and Thomas Gary, date Journal of the Council 1755. The Gary's settled on the line between Laurens and Newberry counties, from Stub entries to Indents issued in payment of claims against S.C. growing out of the Revolution. Thomas Gary was granted four indents, probably for three of the name who served or furnished supplies. Thomas Gary for eight pounds nine shillings and eight pence for provisions supplied the Militial in 1782.

Birth*15 March 1713 Samuel Newman was born on 15 March 1713 at Cecil, Maryland; The vital records of St. Stephen's Parish of Cecil County Maryland, a member of the world-wide Church of England at this time, lists the five youngest children as: Elizabeth born Feb 2,1707, Kathrin born Aug. 28,1709, Jonathan born Feb. 4,1711 (died in infancy Oct. 20, 1714), Samuel born Mar. 15,1713, and Jonathan born Aug.5, 1716. The names of the first four children were all listed at one time implying that the entries were made several years after the births. It may appear peculiar to us today to name a second child the same name of a deceased child but was not unusual at that time. These church records show the marriages and births of the children and grandchildren of Walter implying that the family was very active in the Parish life. Research has proven that there were at least fourteen children born to Walter and Mary.2

Samuel Newman was called to the Office of Deacon...Samuel Newman and wife were members of the Montgomery Church in the County of Philadelphia. They became the first members of the new church.
p. 12...Mary Newman joined, she was the wife of Jonathan Newman. She belonged to the Church of Christ in Southampton in Buck Co., PA.
p. 586-587...Samuel Newman and wife Martha, and Mary Newman, wife of Jonathan Newman were among the founders and early members of the Smiths & Linville's Creek Baptist Church of later Rockingham. They were from PA. Samuel and Jonathan were probably descendants of the Oyster Bay Newmans. Jonathan died in Old Augusta prior to the establishment of the church. His estate settlement by Samuel was recorded Feb. 1750 (Will Bk. 1, p. 93 & 319.) On April 20, 1765, Samuel and Martha asked for a letter of dismissal as they were preparing to move to the Carolinas.9,6
Religion1757 He was In 1757, Samuel Newman wrote in the church minutes that there was some dissension among the members. He wrote: **About this time arose certain of the favorers of that Structureless Practice, infant sprinkling, and in a disorderly manner, called on Alexander Miller to their assistance, to go ridicule and slander our ministers, and our church officer, who at the time did officiate the office of deacon by churches appointment, which said Miller had before aspersed our Rev. Brother of being a Baptist."
Accordingly, on Wednesday, the 21st of September, 1757, the said Miller and a rude assembly with him, in a disorderly manner, without leave, or previous notice given to the church, or persons by him accused, opened our meeting house, and assumed our pulpit, and there slanderously, falsely, and contrary to Christian Rule and Order (did) despitefully use our Minister and Brother, the Deacon, with opprobrious speeches, of spite and malice, entirely untruthful, and unknown to the said parties; and of which we are fully convinced, neither of them guilty of the error by him charged, neither in work, thought, or deed, which said irregular and disorderly practice of his, has since occasioned animosities in the neighborhood, and he, the said Miller, hath been thereby instrumental, in the hands of Satan, to disturb the churches peace, and the peach of the neighborhood, this being a time or noted peach with us in the mist of difficulties elsewhere."
The person that Samual was speaking of was Reverend Alexander Miller, a noted Presbyterian Minister of the area. Reverend Miller and some of his friends charged into the service of the Baptist Church one Sunday. Miller proceeded to the pulpit where he began to denounce the doctrine that was being taught at the church. The charges were leveled at Reverend John Anderson and Deacon SAMUEL NEWMAN.
The "difficulties elsewhere" that Reverend Newman mentioned was the French and Indian war, which was at this time in progress. The next passage written by Reverend Newman reads as follows: "The Wednesday following this riotous action, it pleased God to permit the Heathen (Indians) to fall on our settlements and disordered the whole worse than they had done themselves, the week before. A just retaliation for such unheard of proceedings and measures they has to ??????. The aforesaid proceedings, together with the Indian troubles, Saturday in January, 1758: at which time the kind providence of God enabled us to regulate so many of the disorders that attended us as that which comfort and peace, we could proceed.....
January, 1758...After this time the spring coming on, the Indian troubles continued, and all opportunities of meetings were taken from us: and not only so I but the whole neighborhood forced either to go into forts or over the mountains, to escape their rage, in the month of June following.6

(p.289) endnote 519: Edwards, Crozer ITS, p. 42; Furman Ms., pp. 58-60; the two accounts by Edwards differ slightly and both differ in some particulars from the account given in Bush River CB, 1792; the Edwards account is largely used because Edwards was on the ground in 1772, while the church book account, probably written by the church clerk, Michael Landers, in 1792, is taken “from the best information” twenty years after; Asplunds Reg. 5. ed., gives 1769 as the date of constitution; the constituents were: Samuel Newman and wife, William Crow and wife, and Uriah Gary; Samuel Newman is reported by Edwards as coming with his wife from Mr. Alderson’s church in Va., and as having been called and baptized in N.C; he Is called an excellent man; his children as named by Edwards wereSamuel (m. Castleberry), Uriah (m. Gary), Martha (m. Phegan), Mary (m. Crow), Jane (m. Johnstone), and John; Samuel Newman had a survey of 450 acres made Sept. 11, 1765, in the fork of Broad and Saluda Rivers on spring branches of Bush River and another of 150 acres in 1766 adjoining the first (Plats, VIII, 324; X, 2); no surveys for William Crow or Uriah Gary have been found, but John Gary petitioned for land already improved on Bush River in 1753-he came from Va., with a wife and two children and mentions his father (JC, Sept. 3, 1753); he had a survey on waters of Bush River in 1768 (Plats, X, 199); the neighboring survey of Robert Levil of the same date has as boundaries the plats of Charles Crow and John Cole (Ibid., XVI, 334); George Goggans, donor of the church lot, received a survey of 250 acres on June 13, 1770, on waters of Bush River “on a draft of a small Branch of it called Beaverdam Branch, to westward of James Williams” (Ibid., p. 127). circa 1766 Spring Branches of Bush River, Laurens, South Carolina.11

Newberry County, South Carolina, Probate Estate Abstracts Volume 1 by Glenda Bundrick and Andy Suber. Hard cover, 8 1/2 x 11 size, 373 pages plus front matter and every-name index. Price $30.00 plus $2.50 mailing. Order from Glenda Bundrick, Route 4, Box 254, Newberry, SC 29108. This most useful volume adds greatly to the published material already available on Newberry County. It contains abstracts of the loose estates packets in the Office of Probate Judge in Newberry County, Boxes 1-10 and 355-357 and 361. These packets were not picked at random, but are the earliest estates records for the county, covering roughly 1787-1820 with some estates as late as 1850. There is an occasional unexplainable early will, such as the will of Samuel Newman, dated 12 November 1770 and proved 7 March 1771. Every document in each estate packet appears to have been abstracted, and a number of papers are reproduced in facsimile. In cases where the original will is missing, an abstract from the recorded copy (with proper reference) has been included. By indexing all names – such as purchasers at estates, appraisers, and witnesses – many names might be located which would otherwise lost to the researcher. We anxiously await a continuation of this series.3,14
Death*November 1771 He died in November 1771 at Newberry, South Carolina, at age 58; Mr. Newman was ordained by Messrs. Marshall and Mulkey, but died in November, 1771.3,11
