Wednesday, 4 September –RSPB Blacktoff Sands, Boston, Lincolnshire

After Flamborough we headed to RSPB Blacktoft Sands.

Some kind of berry bushes along the trails to the bird hides:

When we got to the first hide, most of the birds were tucked in:

Then a marsh harrier kept spooking the birds and it was a mad scene of dozens of birds trying to get away.

Lapwings with an avocet

Ducks

Detail

Ducks with the avocet and one redshank (shore bird)

Lapwings with ducks and redshanks

Pied wagtail

The marsh harrier that caused the panic:

Shoveler (duck)

Little egret

Greenshank

Redshanks

Kestrel

Possibly spoonbills

Little grebe

Not sure if this is the harrier or the kestrel

We spent the night at Boston, Lincolnshire, two hours down the road. As we were checking in, I realized I didn’t have my wallet. Fortunately, when I set up my laptop, an email was waiting – a volunteer at Blacktoft Sands had found it and turned it in to the reserve staff.

A note about the hotel in Bridlington, the Expanse. It is an 1930s era building along the seafront. There were signs posted about parking the next day. It turns out they were filming an episode of Last Tango in Halifax there! I’ve never watched the show, but I will have to catch that episode!
