Some of the family say she went to Anderson Co. to join her brother, John Gary, but unless John predeceased his father, there was no brother John in 1810. Van Davis Gary was evidently a member of a poor branch of the Gary family as he was bound out, according to the custom of that day, as an apprentice and, not being pleased with his surroundings, he ran away and went to Elbert Co., GA. There he secured employment with Rev. William Dooley, Jr., Esq., b. 1781, VA. and died 1 Nov 1851, age 70 years and wife, Elizabeth, b. 1786, VA. and died 28 July 1859, age 73 years, buried in the cemetery with Van Davis Gary and their daughter, Frances L. 'I have always understood that he was closely related to Gen. Martin Weatherspoon Gary and his brother, Judge William Gary, of Savannah, GA.,' by Rev. George Pierce Gary.
The old Gary plantation was located near Hartwell, Hart Co., GA. The mill was sold to Mr. Gaines. Mrs Updike's mother, Laura Ann Watson, went to school with Birdie Dooley, a daughter of Wm. and Mary (Glover) Dooley, but she has forgotten the relationship.
