| Note* | Elizabeth Gary All that is definately known is that Elizabeth was nee Gary and that Phillip G. and William C. Gary were brothers or cousins. John L. Davis who has done much research on his ancestor, William C. Gary, has been told they were first cousins; however, that may be, Elizabeth no doubt is a daughter of William Gary who had a family and probably was killed during the Revolution. He left a will, however the will is lost and only deeds to his two sons, William and Charles, are now extant. Col. Jonathan Downs was named his executor and made the deed to his two sons. Their grandfather, Col. Jacob Brooks, executed a will in which he recited his daughter, Amilia (Milly), married William Gary and named thier daughter, Sarah. He probably named all of his children if the will could only be found. Elizabeth Gary, above, married Drury Coker, b. ca. 1765 of South Carolina. He executed his will, prob. 21 Dec. 1830, named wife Betsy, son, Joseph and wife and children, Menice Coker, Polly Dial; wit. Samuel and Wm. F. Downs and James Brewster (all of these wit. were of the Sarah Downs family). Mrs Updike stated that she also seen where Drury Coker's wife recited as Mary. | |

In an email, Josephie Sanders Sparks wrote: Text: The following is a transcript of the pedigree of GB Sanders as he wrote it on Jan 14, 1905 GB Sanders, son of Moses and Priscilla Sanders, was born in Rutherford Co. NC in the year, 1825. His father, Moses Sanders, born in Montgomery? Co NC lived in various other counties in ??? State. He (Moses Sanders) was a son of James Sanders, who was born in Scotland,? and so he was a Scotsman, and lived in Montgomery Co. NC. GB Sanders mother was an illigitimate daughter of Cassendra Coco, or perhaps, Cocoa, or Coker, which names was generally used in speaking of her. She was of Welch blood, or of Welch lineage. The above statement is as far back as I am able to go with my ancestry. Have studied on the matter closely. Jan 14th 1905. GBSanders Note: in the above, GB Sanders had question marks(?) after Montgomery and Scotland. Also, the word before 'State' looks like it is 2 or 3 characters long, the 1st character is capitalized and the other two characters are superscript. Also, there is a period (.) after these characters. The characters look like Sch or Sth or even Sd Note:From a handwritten note written 14 Jan 1905 by GB Sanders. He served in the Revolution though very young, belonged to the commissary department for which he received 200 acres of land near Princeton, Caldwell Co., KY. In the early settlers list it recites that John Gary has gone from Laurens Co. S.C. to Caldwell Co. KY. On 1 Apr. 1787, Charles Jones sold 100 acres to John Gary adj. William Johnson, William Kirkland and John Dalrymple; wit. Thomas Gary, James Smith and Mary Jones. On 15 Oct. 1796, John Gary and wife, Jennie, of Newberry Co. S.C. sold 100 acres to his brother, William Gary; wit. John Leopard, Uriah Cannon and Issac Taylor. This probably was the time of their leaving S.C. and he never returned to S.C. He was named in his father, Charles Gary's, will in 1806 but did not sign as a legatee as there was no estate left. The family migrated from Caldwell Co., KY. to Tuscaloosa Co. AL., but on 20 Mar. 1832, they sold land in Madison Co., MS. They subsequently settled in Middleton, Carroll Co., MS. Milley Coker
F, b. say 1763
| Note* | Milley Coker In an email, Josephine Sanders Sparks wrote: I have my great grandfather's pedigree that states he was the grandson of Cassandra Coker, and son of Prescilla Coker. According to the pedigree, Prescilla was the illegitimate daughter of Cassandra Coker who was of Welch Descent. (Prescilla lived to be 110) Since she was born in 1785, Cassandra and Milley would have been one in the same unless Milley and Cassandra both had illegitimate children in their early teens. Charles Gary's will (Laurens Co wills Book C1, p. 202, Feb 22, 1805) names Milley Coker as a good friend and Cassandry as his natural daughter, which indicates they were not married as backed up by the pedigree. The will also mentions Drury Coker and brother David Gary. Witnesses to the will are John Coker, Wm, Gary and John Armstrong, who also married a Gary. As you know Drury married Elizabeth, sister to Charles. The name Prescilla does run in the Coker line. I feel Milley is really 'Mary Coker' born 1757 to Joseph Coker and Mary Aldridge since they were neighbors and one big family. Joseph's parents were John Coker and Prescilla Geddings. Joseph's sister was Prescilla Coker. The name seems to be passed down to my great great grandmother. | |
